We stock four styles of tonneau cover. Customers usually arrive asking which is best. The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the right one depends on what you actually do with the bed.
Soft roll-up
The cheapest way to cover a bed, and the quickest to get completely out of the way. Unlatch it, roll it to the bulkhead, strap it, and you have the full box open with nothing overhanging.
The trade: it offers the least security. A soft cover is a deterrent, not a lock. It will not hold weight on top of it, and in very cold weather the vinyl stiffens up and is less pleasant to work with.
Best for: keeping weather and eyes off a load, on a budget, when you open the bed often.
Soft tri-fold
Folds forward in three panels rather than rolling. Faster to open partway than a roll-up, tidier when folded, and generally a cleaner look on the truck.
The trade: the folded stack sits at the bulkhead and takes up some bed length. Same security limits as any soft cover.
Best for: mixed use, where you want partial access more often than full access.
Hard tri-fold
Rigid panels. A real step up in security and in how the truck looks, and it will take a light load on top of it. Better in wind at highway speed, and much better at handling snow sitting on it.
The trade: heavier, more expensive, and the folded panels take up more of the bed than a soft fold does.
Best for: people who leave things in the bed and want to worry about it less.
Hard flip-back
The most secure of the four and the most solid-feeling. Locks down properly and looks like part of the truck rather than an accessory bolted on.
The trade: it is the most expensive, and it takes the longest to get fully out of the way when you need the whole box for something tall.
Best for: tools, gear and anything you would rather not explain to an insurer.
What none of them do
None of these is waterproof. All four are water-resistant, which means they will keep the weather off a load in ordinary driving and ordinary rain. In a serious storm, or through a jet wash, water will find the seals. Anyone who tells you a tonneau is a sealed box is telling you what you want to hear.
None of them turns your bed into a safe, either. A hard cover with a good lock is a serious deterrent. It is not a vault.
How to choose
Ask yourself how often you open the bed and what you leave in it. Open it constantly, carry nothing valuable — soft roll-up. Leave tools in it — hard flip-back. Most people land somewhere in between, which is what the middle two styles are for.
